The HPV virus is highly contagious and is spread through intimate contact. Every year, an estimated 1,500 people in the Netherlands get cancer due to HPV, about 1,100 women and 400 men. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of HPV. This campaign is aimed at young people born between 1996 and 2003. The vaccination is only free for them during the catch-up campaign this year. Because there is at least five months between the two injections required, the authorities are urging quick action with this campaign. Throughout the country, existing and additional vaccination locations are being renamed Halte HPV, where young adults can go without an appointment. The first ‘Don’t miss it’ shot was placed this week at the Science Park in Utrecht – also a Halte HPV – in the presence of State Secretary Van Ooijen.

The turnout of the catch-up campaign is now approaching 20%. Research shows that a large proportion of young adults who have not yet been vaccinated do plan to get the shot. When asked, they indicate that they have not yet got around to it for various reasons. The aim of the new campaign is to realize that for free full vaccination, a first injection is necessary before the summer. Only two injections provide long-term protection against HPV (human papilloma virus) and there must be sufficient time in between. More than 1.3 million 18 to 27-year-olds received an invitation at the beginning of 2023 – 900,000 men and 400,000 women. For young adult men, the possibility of being vaccinated against HPV was new, a large proportion of women were already vaccinated at a younger age.

In order to give as many young people as possible the chance to get the HPV vaccination, the GGD will drive special vaccination buses to locations designated as Halte HPV in the week of June 5. There will also be pop-up vaccination locations in places where many young adults come, such as at educational institutions and at train stations. Of course, the permanent vaccination locations have also been opened and also renamed Halte HPV for the occasion. It’s all part of the ‘Don’t Miss It’ campaign. This way, anyone who wants to get the shot can easily make a stopover this week for an HPV vaccination.
