Catholic Church to pay millions of dollars to victims of abuse in Canada

The Catholic Church will have to pay at least 76 million US dollars to hundreds of people who were abused by religious members of the orphanage of St. John of Newfoundland in Canada.

According to the Ernst & Young law firm in charge of calculating the compensationsthe church will pay 104 million Canadian dollars (76 million US dollars) to 292 people who were abused as children in the orfanato Mount Cashel.

The figure is much higher than what was initially estimated by the Catholic Church, which expected 356,417 Canadian dollars and began selling properties on the island of Newfoundland two years ago to cope with the compensations.

So far, the church has raised C$40 million from property sales.

The investigations began in 1986, when they began to reveal sexual and physical abuse committed by the congregation of the Christian Brothers in it orfanato Mount Cashelbut it was not until 1989 and 1992 that a “real” investigation was carried out and it was determined that the police and local authorities had covered up the abuses.
