Jesus, God and spotless man, is baptized by John. Why is this, if there is no sin in Him? The question borders on mystery: through a sensitive sign, Jesus, with his Baptism, is opening the door of salvation to the entire human race. Our nature damaged by original sin is restored by baptismal water.

In the 5th century, Saint Maximus of Turin, referring to that water of the Baptism of the Lord, pointed out the following: “When the Savior washes, all the water necessary for our baptism is purified and the fountain is clean, so that it can later be be administered to the peoples who were to come to the grace of that bath.”

That is, Christ is the source of all purity and if He does not wash us, sin will maintain its dominion over us. The waters of Baptism have a deep meaning: new life and authentic freedom.
