Caune wins the Latvian championship in the five-kilometer race with a new national record /

Caune covered the five-kilometer distance along the streets of Ogres in a new Latvian record – in 15 minutes and 21 seconds. Valmierete improved her Latvian record achieved last year during the “Riga Marathon” competition by two seconds.

The evaluation of her result according to the points tables of the World Athletics Union (“World Athletics”) is very high – 1123 points. With her new Latvian record, she is 32nd in the world ranking, as well as third in the European competition.

In the Latvian championship, the second place went to Māra Čaure – 17:57, and the third – to Ilona Daģa – 18:11. For the men, for the second year in a row, junior Kristers Kudlis was the champion – 15:09, Toms Komas was second – 15:14, while Ralf Dzosen finished third – 15:17.

This road race distance was included in the Latvian championship program for the first time in 2017, when Dmitrijs Seryogins and Karīna Helmane-Soročenkova became the first champions. A break of four years followed and only in 2022 were the champions determined for the second time.
