Researchers at security firm Kaspersky have revealed in recent days that the growing popularity of video streaming services in the past two years has led cybercriminals to take a “ride” on the trend, and they have begun finding ways to exploit it to make innocent users fall into various bins related to these services.

According to a new report from the company, in the year and a half that from the beginning of 2020 to June 2021 it identified more than 93,000 attack attempts based on impersonation of the major streaming services. The company noted that the attempts it identified were directed to 18,938 users. According to which viewing of video streaming services increased in the Corona era by 75%.

This is not a single type of attack, but several types: One type is email phishing attempts, which impersonate one of the services and try to make users think there is a problem with their account, enter a fake website and enter their credit card information – as we have already revealed here About two and a half months ago. According to Kaspersky, 89.93% of such attacks were impersonated by Netflix, 6.26% by Amazon’s Prime Video, 1.96% by Apple TV +, 1.7% by Disney + and 1.44% by Hulu.

Another type is sites that allegedly offer free access to movies and series episodes of these services – according to Kaspersky, no less than 8,650 malicious files offered through such fake sites were offered by her. Of these, 28.72% disguised as episodes of the popular Disney + series, “The Mandelorian”, 28.41% disguised as Netflix’s “Paper House”, 9.69% disguised as Netflix’s “Rick and Morty”, 9.25% disguised as “Peaky Blinders” Netflix and 7.17% disguised as HBO’s Westworld.

Anton V. Ivanov, a security expert at Kaspersky, says that “more and more users are signing up for popular streaming services in order to watch their favorite content. They have adapted new methods to carry out their attacks. ”
