Rs.91 Crore 16 Lakhs have been allocated for the joint drinking water development project for 1,262 rural dwellings in Vellakovila, Moolanoor, Tarapuram, Kundadam, Kangayam, Chennimalai Panchayat Union. In 2013, a tender was issued by the Tamil Nadu Drinking Water and Drainage Board. When the works for this started in 2016, there was a complaint that the construction works were contrary to the project evaluation and did not follow the relevant regulations.

The authorities then conducted an investigation. However, because the pipe was not laid properly, there was a rupture and the water supply was stopped. During the AIADMK regime, various complaints about irregularities in this scheme reached the Chief Secretariat. But the AIADMK government did not see this.

In this project drinking water is being distributed to Kangayam Municipal Union, Kundadam Union, Rudravati Municipal Corporation, Chennimalai Municipal Corporation. During road work near Muttur Oodayam, Cauvery main pipe burst. Due to this the supply of drinking water was completely interrupted. As a result, 200 villages and urban areas are suffering greatly due to lack of drinking water supply. Water and drainage board workers are working to repair the broken pipe.
Due to this, there is a severe shortage of drinking water in the city including Kangayam, Chennimalai.
