Cave di Lipari, collective memory helps tourism to relaunch Italy- Corriere.it

by time news

Memory is an important word because its meaning does not refer only to the past but refers to the connection with the present and allows us to look to the future – and today we have a great need – in a more conscious way. In this regard, I cannot help but think about what the Italian Touring Club has done in its long history, what it is doing and what else, with the help of its members and other authoritative subjects, it could do starting from the Lipari quarries. .

A few years ago we launched an initiative – Tesoro Italia – with which we rekindled the debate around a certain number of places in our country, the most disparate in terms of history and type (palaces, villas, churches, but also evidence of industrial archeology to return to today’s theme) , whose memory was in danger of being lost. We had subtitled the initiative «The negated heritage», precisely to indicate how much useful value today was continually subtracted from the community, an impracticable right to the use and memory of common goods. Moreover, this is what the Faro Convention reminds us when it states that “the right to cultural heritage is inherent in the right to participate in cultural life” and that the “conservation of cultural heritage, and its sustainable use, have as human development and quality of life are the objective “. Human development which is necessarily linked to the presence of a community of heritage, made up of “a group of people who attribute value to specific aspects of the cultural heritage and who wish to support them and pass them on to future generations”.

Touring operates with these aims through its care community, represented by the over two thousand volunteer members who welcome visitors to the “Open for you” places, over 80 sites throughout Italy that the association returns to collective enjoyment, taking care of the country every day, therefore, as a common good so that it is better known , attractive, competitive and welcoming, helping to produce knowledge, to protect and enhance the landscape, the artistic and cultural heritage and the economic-productive excellence of the territories, through widespread volunteering and an ethical, inclusive, responsible and sustainable travel practice.

Here, then, is the third word that, together with memory and care, it also closes the circle on Lipari: tourism. We know that the sector has been hit hard, that we are close to a restart and that the challenge facing the country will not be to return to the pre-pandemic, but to find an original, innovative and sustainable way to develop travels: the territories, with the memory they pass down and the identity that makes them recognizable and unique, represent the fundamental lifeblood to characterize Italy in the new scenario that will take shape in the coming months and years, which will see above all the South, and Sicily in particular, playing a leading role as the new Mediterranean tourist hub.

For all these reasons, the Touring is ready – together with «Corriere della Sera», Museimpresa, Federculture and those who wish to join – to do their part so that Lipari and its quarries can become part of our future, a future nourished by collective memory.
