Four years from the next presidential election, the big maneuvers have already begun within the left anti-New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes). Which mainly brings together elected socialists, opposed to the alliance of their party with La France insoumise (LFI) of Jean-Luc Mélenchon. From the president of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga, to the former prime minister Bernard Cazeneuve, via the mayor of Montpellier, Michaël Delafosse, or François Hollande, all are betting that a significant space will emerge in the center left with the end of the Macron era, and put themselves in working order.

Saturday, May 13, the former first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) Jean-Christophe Cambadélis is organizing a working day in Paris, bringing together political figures and think tanks or social democratic clubs. About thirty speakers will intervene on stage around three themes: the democratic, social and ecological crisis. The place chosen – an adjoining room within the headquarters of the CFDT – serves as a symbol at a time when some see in the former boss of the reformist union, Laurent Berger, the next candidate of a “realistic” left for the presidential.

“I’m accelerating because we have to open up a perspective, a hope”justifies Jean-Christophe Cambadélis, who aims to present a “fundamental program” in September. “It allows us to combine forces”welcomes Guillaume Lacroix, the president of the Radical Left Party (PRG), who will speak on “the democratic crisis and its solutions”.

Bernard Cazeneuve “came out of the woods”

Saturday’s symposium is only the first in a series of events that each has designed to suit their needs. At the beginning of June, the first deputy secretary of the PS, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, organized meetings in Montpellier with Michaël Delafosse to discuss “unity of the left”. Among the guests, Carole Delga and the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, both seen as potential candidates in 2027. The four socialist tenors have in common to have fought against the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, during the congress of Marseille, in January, contributing to fracture the PS.

The other dissident branch of the party, led by the mayor of Vaulx-en-Velin (Rhône), Hélène Geoffroy, behind whom the supporters of François Hollande have lined up, will hold its summer school in Lyon at the beginning of July.

But the high point of this sequence will take place on June 10 with the launch of Bernard Cazeneuve’s movement, called La Convention, the first draft of a political formation designed for the next presidential election. The former socialist minister could bring together “between 1,500 and 2,000 people”assesses Guillaume Lacroix, who put the PRG at the service of the man who has since become a lawyer.
