This Monday, May 1, Labor Day, is celebrated in Spain more than 70 demonstrations to demand salary increases. The CCOO and UGT have warned the CEOE that the mobilizations will increase if a general agreement is not reached in the coming weeks.

In this sense, the secretaries of the union organizations, Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, have criticized the “lack of co-responsibility” of the employer for refusing to sign a general agreement on the evolution of wages in collective agreements. “If there is no agreement, we are going to go through an intense process of mobilizations that knows how they start, but not how they end. The CEOE will know where it wants to go,” they stressed.

“It is necessary to vindicate and demand today that the political organizations that attend these elections not fool us, that they talk about the things that they are going to have to decide,” they have pointed out.

Ask for a salary agreement

The unions have recalled that it is necessary to reach a salary agreement before the summer and that they do not want to “leave negotiations for September”. “There has to be a sharing of the benefits and if not, the conflict will grow,” they have warned.

The warning for employers is clear: “They will have to choose between a negotiation with increases or days that will take the form of a strike in all those sectors whose collective agreements are blocked.”

Along the same lines, they recalled that there is another serious problem in the country: the shortage of manpower available in some sectors. For this reason they have urged employers to “locate what their needs are with job demands, although for this it is necessary to improve working conditions and in many cases simply comply with collective agreements.”

Regarding the collective agreements, the trade unionists have specified that at the moment there are 1,300 who are paralyzed.

spread the wealth

Despite the positive balance due to some improvements achieved, such as the labor reform or the Housing Law, both have expressed that Spain “is a country with problems of a social naturewith many people who have difficulties to reach the end of the month and inflation is sinking many of them.

For this reason, now more than ever measures are necessary to control food priceswhich continue their upward trend, or that of the rentals. “This May Day also has to serve us to get our chests out. Let the employers feel the breath of the country’s streets demanding that they put an end to greed, with the usury that they represent, in some cases, and business profits.”

Demonstrations in different parts of the country

As the unions have detailed, the mobilizations will take place in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Melilla, Navarra, La Rioja and the Basque Country.
