CDMX declares Pedro Linares’ alebrijes intangible cultural heritage

In order to enhance the cultural creation of people and communities, the Government of Mexico City recognized as intangible cultural heritage to the alebrijes of Pedro Linares LopezMexican plastic artist.

In a recognition ceremony, the capital president recalled that on December 30, 2019, the declaration of the Pedro Linares alebrijes as intangible cultural heritage of Mexico City was published in the Official Gazette, with the aim of recognizing, protecting and exalting this craftsmanship, as well as its value to the traditions of popular art in the city.

“The alebrijes were born in the heart of Mexico City, in the historic neighborhoods of the City, where the Linares have worked in the workshops that are currently still standing thanks to that spirit of inheritors of crafts (…) today the Government of the “The City recognizes the Linares family for their contribution to the preservation of these traditions,” he celebrated.

Likewise, he recalled that since 2007, the Museum of Popular Art, attached to the capital’s Ministry of Culture, has celebrated the creation of the Linares with a parade of monumental alebrijes.

“Over the years, these original crafts have become a tourist attraction for many people who come from other parts of the country, and from many countries who visit the city, to admire them, acquire them and take them to their nations of origin,” stood out.

Born in 1906 in Mexico City, Pedro Linares was a master cartonero, expert craftsman, who became famous with his Judas, recognized by artists of the stature of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. He inherited the trade from his father and invented this craft at the age of 30, the product of a dream, the president recalled.
