CDU chief post – Friedrich Merz is to be nominated on Monday – domestic politics

by time news

Friedrich Merz (65, CDU) wants it – not surprisingly – probably too!

As BILD learned, the CDU district executive Hochsauerland was invited to nominate Merz as a candidate for the post of CDU federal chairman on Monday evening.

This would make the former parliamentary group leader of the Union the third candidate for the party’s top post. Previously, Chancellor Helge Braun (49) and foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen (56) announced their candidacies. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (41) had renounced a candidacy.

Merz had already tried twice to become head of the CDU. It failed twice: in 2018 to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and in 2020 to Armin Laschet.

But now all good things could come in threes …

BECAUSE: For the first time in the history of the federal CDU, the base will decide on the party leader. A membership decision determines the head at the top of the party. And Merz is a huge favorite among the members.

The new CDU federal chairman will then be officially elected at a party congress on January 21st and 22nd in Hanover.
