The decision lies with the regional associations: CDU leader Friedrich Merz wants to leave the responsibility for possible BSW coalitions to the regional associations.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has given the CDU regional associations a free hand to decide on possible coalitions with the Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance. “If it corresponds to the principles of the party, the CDU, if it does not violate any of our party conference resolutions, then these regional parties have the right to make such a decision,” said the CDU leader in an ARD summer interview on Sunday.

“The two state parties in Thuringia and Saxony have the last word, the first and the last word in these decisions,” he added, referring to the state elections in September. Thuringia’s CDU state leader Mario Voigt told him, “these are reasonable people, you can work together sensibly with them.” Therefore, he did not rule it out. Merz confirmed that there were CDU party conference resolutions against alliances with the AfD and the Left Party.

“I rule out cooperation with the BSW at the federal level,” the party leader stressed. “These are completely different political ideas,” he said, alluding to foreign and security policy. State elections will be held in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg in September. The newly founded BSW is now polling at between 15 and 20 percent.
