CDU in the fuel price debate: “Every day that passes unnecessarily is expensive for the citizens” – domestic politics

by time news

In the debate about a long-awaited fuel price brake, the Union has now called for relief of at least 40 cents per liter.

CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn (41) said on Monday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin” after announcements of relief plans from the coalition: “We are excited. It has to be at least 40 cents per liter and it has to be unbureaucratic.”

In view of the sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices in the wake of the Ukraine war, the CDU and CSU had spoken out in favor of reducing mineral oil and value-added tax on fuel prices.

According to BILD information, Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (43, FDP) is planning a state tank subsidy. This should therefore be deducted directly when paying at the gas station.

Tax reduction or discount model?

No matter how you design a fuel price brake, whether it is a tax cut or a discount model, these are technical questions in the end, said the first parliamentary director of the Union parliamentary group Thorsten Frei (48) on Monday on Deutschlandfunk.

One is willing to talk “about all possible models”. It is crucial that citizens and businesses are relieved at the petrol pump.

“One hand of the government doesn’t know what the other is doing at the moment. There is no vote. It lasts, it lasts, it lasts. This is fatal. Motorists need a solution now. Every day that goes by unnecessarily is expensive for the citizens of Germany,” said Hamburg CDU chairman Dr. Christoph Ploß (36) at BILD Live.

Ploss said the oil situation had changed completely. Two years ago you got money for removing oil. Prices are at record levels today. Christian Lindner’s suggestion of discounting petrol per liter is honourable, but leads to paper chaos:

“Too much bureaucracy doesn’t really relieve the burden,” says Ploß.

Instead, the government should reduce the energy tax to a European minimum and the value added tax in order to achieve a relief of 50 cents or more per liter. This is finally an unbureaucratic solution.

When asked how long the government should need for such a solution, Ploß explained with a swipe at the traffic light: “A government that is strong in action could implement this in a few days.”

The CDU will now put pressure on so that a solution can be found quickly. However, this should not be “a placebo solution”.

Since the start of the Ukraine war a good two weeks ago, fuel prices have increased dramatically. They have risen to well over two euros per liter.
