In a survey, the Union lost a little of its support among the population, while the SPD gained a little. In the “Trend Barometer” published on Tuesday by the opinion research institute Forsa for the broadcasters RTL and ntv, the CDU and CSU together received 30 percent – one percentage point less than the previous week. 15 percent (plus one) of those surveyed would vote for the Chancellor’s party SPD if there were a general election next Sunday.
The FDP lost one point, reaching four percent and thus falling below the five percent hurdle. The values of the Greens (eleven percent), the AfD (17 percent) and the BSW (7 percent) remained unchanged. The Left fell to three percent (minus one), and the other parties accounted for 13 percent (plus two).
In terms of the question of chancellor preference, incumbent Olaf Scholz (SPD) and CDU leader Friedrich Merz are neck and neck. 27 percent of respondents said they would vote for Scholz or Merz if the chancellor were directly elected. 46 percent of all eligible voters would prefer neither Merz nor Scholz as chancellor.
Forsa surveyed 2,501 randomly selected voters from July 23 to 29. The statistical margin of error is given as plus/minus 2.5 percentage points.
