This July 21 marks the Day of the Rotisserie Chicken, a date that commemorates a dish that, despite being part of one of the most diverse cuisines in the world, has managed to establish itself as one of the most representative and consumed foods by Peruvian families. Thus, this day emphasizes the significance of rotisserie chicken in its ability to generate jobs and its contribution to the economic growth of the country.

This is simply demonstrated: across the national territory, there are around 13,000 rotisserie chicken restaurants. This was confirmed today by the specialist from the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Enrique Gutiérrez Ochoa.

“In our country, there are about 13,000 rotisserie chicken restaurants nationwide. They are present in the coast, highlands, and jungle; in the north, central, and south. All Peruvians enjoy eating our rotisserie chicken, as it is a dish that unites the family and is often eaten with friends,” commented the professional in an interview with TV Perú.

Additionally, Gutiérrez highlighted the importance of rotisserie chicken in the Peruvian economy, emphasizing its fundamental role in the poultry chain. This emblematic dish not only delights local and foreign palates but also significantly drives employment and economic activity in various sectors. The poultry industry, closely linked with the production of rotisserie chicken, is responsible for generating approximately 460,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly.

The Midagri professional indicated that the per capita consumption of chicken in Peru is 56 kilograms per year, a figure that increases by 6% annually. This constant rise in consumption reflects the popularity and versatility of chicken in the daily diet of Peruvians, solidifying it as a preferred protein in the menus of homes and restaurants.

The high consumption of chicken on the tables of Peruvian homes is attributed to various reasons. First, chicken is a food that pairs perfectly with different dishes and cooking styles. From traditional rotisserie chicken and aji de gallina to more contemporary and creative preparations, chicken easily adapts to any recipe, always providing a delicious and nutritious option.

Moreover, chicken is considered a healthy food and a high-quality protein. Its economic accessibility makes it an available option, allowing families from various socioeconomic strata to incorporate it into their daily diet. This combination of nutrition, versatility, and affordability has contributed to the ongoing increase in chicken consumption.

The main accompaniment to rotisserie chicken, the potato, also represents an important value in the national economy. This traditional tuber not only perfectly complements the flavor of the chicken but also significantly contributes to the Peruvian agricultural sector. The constant demand for potatoes in rotisserie chicken restaurants promotes their production and benefits local farmers.

Furthermore, rotisserie chicken restaurants are increasingly turning to national potato consumption, while simultaneously reducing imports of foreign potatoes. This trend not only supports the local economy but also promotes sustainability and food quality. In this way, sales of the Peruvian tuber have shown a remarkable improvement, reinforcing its position as a key product in the country’s food chain.

Other significant chains that are closely linked to rotisserie chicken restaurants include purple corn and, in the jungle, passion fruit. The preparation of sauces that usually accompany the dish, such as ají amarillo and mayonnaise, also benefit from this. Finally, the cultivation of vegetables is favored due to the side dishes that accompany rotisserie chicken.
