Celebrating the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anna: Honoring the Parents of the Theotokos

by time news

Today, Monday, September 9, according to the Calendar of Saints, we celebrate the Synaxis of Saints Joachim and Anna.

The synaxis of the righteous parents of the Most Holy Theotokos, according to ancient ecclesiastical tradition, is designated the day after the Nativity of the Theotokos, as they became the forebears of universal salvation with the birth of their holy daughter. “The synaxis of them is celebrated in the six-chambered house of the Theotokos, near the great church in the Chalcpraetii.”

Joachim married Anna, the daughter of Matthan the Priest from the tribe of Levi and of Maria, his wife, from the tribe of Judah. Because the royal and priestly tribes were related to each other, considering that the Kingdom was deemed equal to the Priesthood, they neither gave nor took daughters from other tribes that were considered common. Thus, after this holy couple led a God-pleasing life, as we learn from the biographies of the feasts of July 25, September 8, and December 9, Joachim died eight years after the Entrance of his daughter the Theotokos at the age of 92, while Anna died 11 months after Joachim’s death, at the age of 83.
