Celebrating the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anna: Honoring the Parents of the Virgin Mary

by time news

Today, Monday, September 9, according to the Calendar of Saints, we celebrate the Synaxis of Saints Joachim and Anne.

The synaxis of the righteous parents of the Most Holy Theotokos, according to ancient ecclesiastical tradition, was established the day after the birth of the Theotokos, because they became the forerunners of global salvation with the birth of their holy daughter. “The synaxis of them is held in the six-air house of the Theotokos, near the great church in the Chalcpraetioi.”

Joachim married Anna, the daughter of Matthan the Priest of the tribe of Levi and of Maria, his wife, from the tribe of Judah. Since the Royal and Priestly tribes were related to each other, as the Kingdom was considered equal to the Priesthood, they did not give or take daughters from other tribes considered common. Thus, after living a life pleasing to God, as informed by the biographical notes of the feasts on July 25, September 8, and December 9, Joachim died eight years after the Entrance of his daughter the Theotokos at the age of 92, and Anne 11 months after Joachim’s death, at the age of 83.
