Celebrating World Day of Social Medicine and the Legacy of Dr. Rene Favaloro

Press MPPS.- To draw attention to the right to life as a maxim, Every July 12, the World Day of Social Medicine has been celebrated since 2004, in celebration of the birth of the distinguished Argentinian doctor, Dr. René Favaloro (1923-2000), heart surgeon, known as the creator of the “Bypass”, a contribution that saved him many lives, a successful treatment he prepared and hopefully changed the lives of people with coronary heart disease.

Favaloro was known as a humble man, a supporter of public affairs, an energetic and persistent student, who wrote books on the history of Argentina, where he dedicated his life and work, in fact he expressed that “There is no medicine without practicing medical humanity.”

In his Decalogue of the Good Doctor he considered:

1. Medical history is ahead of any technological progress.
2. All patients are equal.
3. Work is a team.
4. Maximum respect for the family doctor.
5. Charge moderate fees.
6. Do teaching and research.
7. Prevent, encourage healthy living.
8. Don’t lose humanity.
9. Advocate for peace.
10. Hope has biological effects.

Public health is one of the main components of society, leading major efforts to promote health and quality of life, as well as prevent and control communicable and chronic non-communicable diseases. It should be noted that the Government of Venezuela maintains social policies, which, promoted by the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, and the Minister of Popular Power of Health, Magaly Gutiérrez, maintain access to quality health services.
