The Electricity Corporation of Ecuador (Celec EP), through the Hidronación Business Unit, reported that due to the high inflow of flows into the Daule-Peripa reservoir in the last 24 hours, the reservoir discharge will be increased.

The opening of the gates will be carried out with the safety protocol of the dam and in coordination with the Secretary of Risk Management and the parish GADs. At the moment, said opening remains at one meter. Celec will proceed to gradually increase the discharge of the reservoir from 730 m3/s to 940 m3/s.

Sources from the Risk Management Secretariat (SGR) indicated that The download will take place on May 2, 2023. Given this, a meeting was scheduled for April 30 with mayors, coordinators and technicians from Zone 5 of the SGR, Guayas Governor and Celec EP staff.

contingency measures

In a statement, the Electricity Corporation of Ecuador indicated that “we will keep informed about the maneuvers that must be carried out to maintain reservoir level and continue attenuating the avenues due to the rainfall expected in the coming days, downstream of the dam”.

The company also recommended that continue to take contingency measures “and be attentive to changes in the conditions of the river downstream, with the possible increase in rainfall.”

According to Celec, until April 11 the dam received an average water flow of less than 800 m3/s. However, as of April 12, these exceeded 1,500 m3/s and reached 3,000 m3/s.

At the moment the dam accumulates 5 450 million m3. To avoid an uncontrolled release, the Flood Control Protocol was launched. This includes the gradual opening of the three gates to release 1,000 m3/s.
