Cement consumption fell by 11.6% in April in Spain, compared to the same month last year, according to data published in the Cement Statistics.

Specifically, the monthly data has been affected by the comparison with the month of April 2022, when an “atypically high” cement consumption was registered, being in turn the highest in the last decade, as reported on Tuesday. in a press release the Association of cement manufacturers in Spain (Oficemen).

In this sense, the general director of Oficemen, Aniceto Zaragoza, explained that the reason was the ‘rebound effect’ that occurred in the construction sector once the transport strike ended.

Likewise, Zaragoza has stressed that in March 2022 the works that were paralyzed due to lack of materials resumed and accelerated in April, to meet deadlines, “which distorted the monthly consumption figures upwards.”

In the last 12 months, consumption has fallen by 1.8%, with total consumption, in absolute values, of 14.98 million tons of cement, while in the first four months of the year, cement consumption experienced a increase of 1.6%, up to 4.8 million tons.

Exports grew by 3.7% in April, although in the annual accumulated a fall of 10.5% is maintained. In April alone, 486,926 exported tons were lost compared to the same month in 2022.

For their part, imports also sank by 48.9%, to 46,049 tons, compared to the 90,111 registered in the same month of the previous year.
