(ANSA) – TOKYO, SEPTEMBER 21 – The record number of centenarians in Japan has been updated, having grown for 54 consecutive years. According to data from the Tokyo Ministry of Health published in the week that celebrates the Day of Respect for the Elderly, people over 100 years of age as of September 1st stood at just over 95,100, with an increase of 2,980 units compared to the previous year. Of these, women represent over 88% of the total, with 83,958 people, while male centenarians are 11,161. Currently, the oldest woman in Japan is Itooka Tomiko, 116 years old, from the city of Ashiya, in the prefecture of Hyogo, while the man with the most springs behind him is Mizuno Kiyotaka, 110 years old, from Iwata, in the prefecture of Shizuoka. The Japanese ministry also said that in 2023, life expectancy in the country rose to 87.14 years for women, and 81.09 for men, increasing for the first time in three years, thanks to the easing of the impact of Covid-19.
