The Central Bank of Cuba (BCC) is working on the development of a warning system through notifications that will reach the cell phone of each bank account holder. The user may receive alerts on banking operations such as “transactions, credits, debits, remittances, promotions,” as well as “other issues of interest.”

According to statements to the official newspaper Granma by Carlos Miguel Casas Sancesario, head of the BCC’s Systems Development and Interoperability department, the new notification system for bank management alerts will arrive via SMS or the toDus instant messaging application, developed by UCI engineers and which It is popularly known as “the Cuban WhatsApp.”

In the case of remittances, the BCC currently does not have a system to account for them. The manager explains that, since there is no channel, “we plan for the notification services to alert when the client receives it, for which certain information necessary for the bank will have to be declared.”

The expert specified that a trial month will be given, which must be requested through bank managers, although the commercial offer and the contracting channel remain to be developed. The system is expected to help customers gain better control of their finances and avoid fraud.

“The aspiration is that the process is not done by a bank agent in a branch, but by the client themselves through a website, in which they decide the service they want to receive,” he said without detailing whether the system will have any cost. If so, it is also unknown whether it will be charged per notification or a flat monthly fee.

Forced banking in Cuba

With the mandatory nature of banking in Cuba through Resolution 111/2023, issued in August of last year by the BCC, there is a greater push towards the digitalization of transactions.

According to an official note, the country has a broad technological base, with more than 7.6 million mobile lines and 6.8 million internet users, in addition to significant connectivity coverage in homes and public spaces. Therefore, progress is being made in electronic payment channels.

This ecosystem has allowed a qualitative leap in the use of electronic commerce, reflected in the increase in the volume of transactions and users on platforms.

At the end of 2023, 977 million operations were registered in Transfermóvil, 25% more than the previous year; and 37.7 million through Mi Transfer. The percentage of cashless transactions reached 68.30%, evidencing a growing “preference” for electronic payment solutions.
