Cepsa has reached its first commercial agreement to export green hydrogen to Europe with the Getec group, one of the main European providers of energy services for industry and the real estate sector, which operates in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy, to which it will supply from 2026 for distribution to industrial customers.

With this agreement, the multi-energy company takes another step in its strategy of becoming a main player in the deployment and production of green hydrogen and in the consolidation of the maritime corridor between the Andalusian Valley of Green Hydrogen -the largest green hydrogen ‘hub’ of Europe- and the Port of Rotterdam, following the agreements reached both with the port and with ACE Terminal.

Specifically, Cepsa plans to start the first exports of green hydrogen from Spain in 2026. The supply of green hydrogen will arrive at the Port of Rotterdam, where a hydrogen infrastructure is being developed for its reception, and from there it will be distributed to the points of final supply ready for use, in the form that Getec customers require, reported the company, which presented this agreement during the World Hydrogen 2023 Summit & Exhibition in Rotterdam.

The director of Commercial & Clean Energies at Cepsa, Carlos Barrasa, present in Rotterdam at this forum, pointed out that this agreement is “one more example of the opportunities for collaboration in decarbonisation solutions offered by the corridor between the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley and the Port of Rotterdam.

“At Cepsa, we continue to comply with our Positive Motion strategy, which will allow us to supply green hydrogen at scale to accelerate the energy transition in Europe,” he added.

For his part, Thomas Schoepke, member of the GETEC steering committee, considered that the use of green hydrogen constitutes “a crucial pillar” for the decarbonization of the industrial sector. Therefore, he considered that “the agreement with a partner as renowned as Cepsa is an important step in this process.”

Cepsa is developing two gigawatts (GW) of green hydrogen in its two Andalusian energy parks, located in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) and San Roque (Cádiz), as part of its 2030 strategy to become a leader in sustainable mobility and production of renewable hydrogen and second generation biofuels.

The two hydrogen plants, with an investment of 3,000 million euros, will form part of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, for which the group led by Maarten Wetselaar has recently signed several collaboration agreements throughout the hydrogen value chain.
