And to do this it intends to build a vast underground plant along the French-Swiss border.
The underground site will have a circumference of 91 km and will be 200 meters deep, half of which lies under the French department of Haute-Savoie and half under the Swiss canton of Geneva.

The new chamber, with an estimated cost of 16 billion euros, will also have eight above-ground structures: six in France and two in Switzerland. The institute is currently conducting feasibility studies and, if confirmed, work on the project would begin in 2032.
However, residents of the French part of Haute-Savoie have their reservations about the FCC (future circular collider), citing environmental damage from mining, truck emissions, and planned deforestation for above-ground sites.
Thierry Lemmel of the Co-cernés pressure group he told Le Parisien newspaper: “We are not against science, but we are against this project. Digging the tunnel will require the removal of enormous amounts of rubble. This represents a million truck trips.”
Another member of the group mentioned the energy consumption of the project, estimated at 700,000 homes.
The Greens have tabled a motion for a debate in parliament on the topic.
CERN itself is based in Switzerland, but its site borders the French border and many of its employees are frontier workers who live in France and commute.
