CES 2022: Your television of the future can do that | Life & Knowledge

by time news

At the start of the technology fair CES in Las Vegas, numerous manufacturers presented their TV innovations. The trend is towards optimized sound and picture quality – and that’s not all: devices are increasingly being integrated into living areas and are becoming more mobile.

Samsung’s novelty for watching TV everywhere is called “The Freestyle” and is a portable mini-projector. At first glance, it looks like a smart speaker with a swiveling stand and has a lens built into the narrow side.

He can use it to cast a picture up to 100 inches (approx. 254 cm) in size on any surface. The “Freestyle” should automatically adapt the display to the respective surface: proportions are corrected, an autofocus sharpens the image.

For home cinema, videos can be transmitted to the projector either via WLAN, HDMI connection or Bluetooth. Anyone who already owns a Samsung television can, however, also mirror its program on the “Freestyle”. You can also use your smartphone.

Additional devices for sound reproduction are not necessary, the small device (17.2 cm long, 9.5 cm diameter) has integrated loudspeakers for 360-degree all-round sound. It also obeys voice commands and can be connected to various voice assistants.

If you want to use the projector on the go, you can use a battery pack for the power supply, which Samsung plans to offer as an accessory from April. An external power bank (at least 60 watts) can also be connected.

And: The “Freestyle” is compatible with E26 lamp sockets. So it is possible that you can hang it on the ceiling.

As long as you are not playing videos, you can also use the “Freestyle” to create lighting effects. A translucent lens cap is supplied for this purpose, which can, for example, project visual effects to match the current music. Additional lens caps for different lighting effects will be available as accessories.

The Samsung “The Freestyle” comes on the market in February and is expected to cost 999 euros.

TV on stand

The TV “StanbyME” (it’s really called that, no letter is missing) from LG Electronics can also be moved around the apartment. The device with a 27 inch screen (approx. 69 cm) is mounted on a stand that can be pushed around on castors.

The height of the stand can be adjusted, the screen can be tilted or rotated from the classic landscape format to portrait format. Thanks to a built-in battery, the small television can be operated wirelessly for up to three hours.

Content can be transferred to the “StanbyME” via WLAN, for example, but also via cable (USB, HDMI). The television is controlled by remote control, but also by touch or gesture recognition.

It is still open whether and when the mobile television will be launched in Germany.

TV with fabric cover

This also applies to the “LG Objet TV” (which is really called that too) – an OLED television whose screen is covered by a fabric cover when it is switched off.

At the push of a button on the remote control, the cover moves down to reveal the 65-inch screen. If you don’t want to watch TV, but only want to control music playback with the device, for example, only a narrow strip of the display can be released – the rest remains hidden.

LG promises precise color display and extremely high contrast for the “Objet TV” thanks to the built-in OLED technology. A 4.2-channel sound system (80 watts) should provide all-round sound.

The fabric cover of the “LG Objet TV” can be exchanged and is available in three different colors: beige, redwood and green. The device can be leaned against the wall or hung at an angle of up to five degrees.

Camera recognizes viewers

For its new Bravia XR models (including models Z9K with 8K and X95K with 4K), Sony relies on mini-LED screen technology and promises very high brightness, deep black tones and a large dynamic range thanks to the precisely controllable background lighting.

For the first time, Sony is also introducing a Bravia cam with its televisions, which observes the viewer. Through the camera, the television recognizes where the users are in the room and how far away they are from the television. Sony promises that the televisions will optimize their picture and sound settings in this way.

Gesture control should also be possible with the help of the camera. And when the last viewer has left the room, the television dims the picture brightness to save energy.

Clever: If the remote control cannot be found, you can track it down using a finder function that plays a ringtone.

Remote control without batteries

Samsung had already announced at the last CES 2021 that it would deliver all new TV models with a remote control that is operated by solar power. The models of the year 2022 will now receive a remote control that can also get its energy from the radio waves from devices such as the home Internet router.

In addition, the “SolarCell Remote” can still be charged with daylight or artificial light. If that doesn’t happen quickly enough, it can be refilled via a USB-C port.

Samsung hopes to save up to 200 million disposable batteries, said Samsung boss Jong-Hee Han at a presentation in Las Vegas.

The technology fair CES runs until January 7th.
