The team, made up of a surgeon, an anesthetist and two nurses (floor and operating room), already operated on the first patients on Thursday. From the Abéché university hospital, this team helps decompress the Adré and Abéché health facilities, which make a huge effort to respond to the needs, which are overwhelming. They will soon be joined by a second surgical team and a physiotherapist from the ICRC.

Most of the health facilities in Sudan have stopped working due to cuts in electricity and running water, as well as shortages of medical supplies and food, forcing patients to seek care elsewhere. sure.

“The crisis in Sudan is transcending its borders, and is demanding a lot of resources from neighboring countries,” said Jerome Fontana, head of the ICRC delegation in N’Djamena. “Patients with gunshot wounds often require lengthy and complex treatment, including orthopedic and reconstructive surgery. When they arrive in large numbers, often accompanied by family members, the demands on hospitals are enormous.”

Some 160,000 people, including more than 1,000 injured in ongoing violence, have fled Sudan’s Darfur region to Chad. Most are women and children who have been exhausted after spending several days on the road. Red Cross branches in Ouaddaï, Sila and Wadi Fira are supporting refugees, returnees and host communities by building shelters and water infrastructure in Ouaddaï. The ICRC has been working with the Chadian Red Cross to support families who have lost contact with their loved ones. The organization has also distributed basic necessities for the home and tents.

Since fighting broke out in Sudan on 15 April, the ICRC and the Sudanese Red Crescent have been working to deliver surgical supplies to hospitals, help collect and identify human remains, and improve access to clean water. In addition, the ICRC has maintained a dialogue with all parties to the conflict in Sudan in order to facilitate medical evacuations of the wounded and to remind those parties of their obligations under the rules of international humanitarian law.
