Marine Corps Commander Kim Gye-hwan, one of the key suspects in the ‘suspicion of external pressure on the investigation of the death of Chae Sang-byeong’, appeared for an investigation by the High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office.
According to the legal community on the 4th, the 4th investigation department of the Corruption Investigation Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Dae-hwan) summoned Commander Kim in connection with the ‘Chae Sang-byeong death case‘ on this day.
When Commander Kim arrived, reporters asked, ‘Have you ever told Colonel Park Jeong-hoon that the VIP was furious?’, ‘Have you ever heard that the order to withhold the transfer was the intention of the President’s Office?’, ‘Have you ever read a text message from the Vice Minister telling you not to specify charges?’ I asked questions such as ‘Are you there?’, but Commander Kim went in without answering.
Commander Kim has been booked as a key suspect in the case, along with former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop and Ministry of National Defense legal affairs officer Yoo Jae-eun.
Prior to Commander Kim, the Corruption Investigation Office called in Manager Yoo Jae-eun at the end of last month and Park Gyeong-hoon, former acting head of the Ministry of National Defense’s investigation headquarters, on the 2nd to conduct an investigation into suspicions of external pressure on the investigation.
Commander Kim is suspected of interfering with the work of the Marine Corps investigation team, which attempted to transfer the results of the investigation to the police following the death of Sang-Byeong Chae in July of last year. At the time, the investigative team reported that it would transfer eight people, including former Marine Corps 1st Division commander Lim Seong-geun, to the police on charges of professional negligence manslaughter, but Commander Kim is suspected of ordering this to be put on hold or suspended.
In addition, he is also known to have said, ‘This happened after the VIP (President) was furious and spoke on the phone with the (Defense) Minister at the Presidential Office meeting.’
Commander Kim said in a command letter to subordinate units after the April 10 general election, “As a commander who must think of the organization as the top priority, I am filled with sadness, regret, and unspeakable agony. “These days, the reality continues that it is difficult to even look up at the sky, so it is difficult to even breathe every day,” he said.
