The chairman of the “Evangelical Working Group” of the Union parties (EAK), Thomas Rachel, called for Andreas Rödder to be replaced at the head of the CDU Basic Values Commission on Wednesday. Rödder had brought CDU-led minority governments into play in “Stern”, which would also receive their majority through votes from the AfD if necessary. This is “completely okay,” said the Mainz history professor. The “red line” only runs if the AfD officially tolerates it.

EAK boss Rachel called these statements “unspeakable and irresponsible”. Cooperation with the AfD, which is right-wing extremist and aims to leave the EU and NATO, is “incompatible with our values,” warned the Bundestag member and recalled that Rödder had already brought up the possibility of abandoning the “C” in the party name.
Rachel told the FAZ that it wasn’t normally his style to demand personnel steps. But Rödder clearly wants to shift “the party’s core identity”. Anyone who deviates from the CDU’s basic values on a central issue such as the attitude towards the AfD “cannot also be chairman of its basic values commission”. Rachel demands that “the appropriate consequences must be drawn immediately” and sees “the party leadership as responsible”.

Rödder came to the head of the Basic Values Commission after the election of Friedrich Merz as CDU federal chairman. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann announced after Rödder’s push for the AfD that they appreciated his work, but did not share his opinion “on this point”.
