José Rafael Curruchiche, head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (Feci), reported this Wednesday, May 3, that the Second Chamber of Higher Risk confirmed the dismissal in the Phantom Plazas case.

He added that the appeal for cassation was filed against that resolution, which is scheduled for a public hearing by the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) for May 29 at 11:00 a.m.

The aforementioned Room confirmed the dismissal or closure of the Phantom Plazas case that implicated 59 people, among them ex-deputies of the Congress of the Republic.

The appeal against the resolution of the High Risk A judge, Claudette Domínguez, who decided to close the case for the benefit of the former deputies in September 2022, it was rejected and the dismissal was firm.

The investigation by the Public Ministry and the extinct International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) established that during the period of the Board of Directors of the Legislative Body 2014-2015 people were hired without ever working for Congress.

These people did not work, but they received salaries of between Q15 thousand and Q20 thousand, even some only had a diversified level of education.

The investigation determined that the accused lent their name and received funds for the payment of Congress payroll, but they did not show up to work, even, several of them worked for other state institutions.

Among the positions they apparently held included secretaries, assistants and operational technicians, among others.
