La Rochelle, although double title holder, still cannot take off in this 2023-2024 Champions Cup. In South Africa, Ronan O’Gara’s men were beaten at the last second by the Stormers (21-20). Yet ahead at half-time thanks to a try from Kerr-Barlow and two penalties from Antoine Hastoy, the Rochelais conceded two tries in the second period. The last one was transformed beyond 80 minutes by opener Manie Libbock.

A defeat that goes badly for the Maritimes, especially since they were in front throughout the match and a try from Antoine Hastoy was refused to them in the 76th minute of play. Fifth with two defeats in two matches, La Rochelle has two points in Group D before facing leader Leicester on January 14.

The UBB is enjoying itself

Already a clear winner against Connacht last week (5-41), Union Bordeaux-Bègles continued its momentum by winning against Bristol this Saturday afternoon (36-17). An improved victory allowed in the first moments of the match by Maxime Luccu, author of a penalty, a try and a transformation in six minutes. Before half-time, internationals Louis Bielle-Barrey and Damian Penaud also scored a try each.

The second period was more balanced, with both teams scoring two tries each. The Bristol revolt will not change the final result and Bordeaux is at the top of its group A with 10 points, ahead of LOU.

The LOU of a very small point

The Lyonnais can have a smile, they who were beaten by Bristol last week on a drop from Sheedy in the 85th minute of play. Against the South African Bulls, the Lyonnais won by one point (29 -28). However, things started badly with a try from Zak Burger in the second minute of play. But in front of their Gerland crowd, the LOU knew how to sound rebellious.

Behind at the break despite two tries, Lyon was able to count on its replacements. Entering in the 58th minute of play, 22-year-old hooker Tanis Charcosset scored four minutes later, allowing his team to get back in front. Five minutes later, van Standen’s converted try allowed the Bulls to regain the advantage, before another Lyon substitute, Thibaut Regard, scored for the bonus try in the 73rd minute.

With seven points, LOU is second in its group behind UBB. At 9 p.m., Racing will face Ulster, a week after the home defeat against Harlequins. The latter will host Toulouse on Sunday and Stade Français will host Leicester at 6:30 p.m.
