This looks, unmistakably, like a sanction from UEFA, the European football association which organizes the Champions League. Tomasz Kwiatkowski, 45, the Polish referee in charge of video assistance for the Champions League match between Paris SG and Newcastle (1-1) on Tuesday, was replaced in the Real Sociedad-RB Salzburg match for which he was to officiate this Wednesday, AFP learned from the European body.

This information had already been relayed, at the start of the day, by several foreign media. Although the reason for this downgrade has not been specified by the body, this change comes after several contentious decisions taken by the refereeing body in the second half of the PSG-Newcastle match.

No communication from UEFA on these facts of the game

A penalty was thus awarded in the 98th minute to the Parisians by the central referee Szymon Marciniak following the intervention of the VAR and viewing of the control screen by the Pole, after a handball from the Newcastle defender Tino Livramento in the area. Twenty-five minutes earlier, another very similar hand in the area, from the very young Lewis Miley (72nd), had not been checked by the referee central, no more than a possible foul by Anthony Gordon on the Moroccan full-back Achraf Hakimi a few minutes earlier (69th).

UEFA has not communicated on these facts of the game, nor on this possible sanction for the Polish official. Officially, the texts do not provide for an exception concerning hand faults if the ball has previously bounced off another part of the offending player’s body, which was the case in both situations.
