On Thursday evening, Florian Wirtz took to the pitch for the first time in a Champions League match – and achieved something historic.

Florian Wirtz made German football history in his first game in the Champions League. The Bayer Leverkusen attacking star scored twice in the first half of his debut in the premier class against Feyenoord Rotterdam.

Before him, no German player had ever scored two goals in their debut. The 21-year-old scored the lead for the German double winners in the fifth minute, then made it 3-0 (36′).

“I’ve been really looking forward to the game for the last few days and that’s how I went in,” Wirtz told the streaming service DAZN. “Then it was successful – all the better. I didn’t expect to leave the first half with two goals.”

Thanks to the 4-0 win in Rotterdam, Bayer is in third place in the new 36-team league after the first matchday. Only Celtic Glasgow (5-1 against Slovan Bratislava) in second place and Bayern Munich (9-2 against Dinamo Zagreb) in first place are doing better. You can find the complete table here.
