Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) will not attend the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic this year due to the tense Corona situation. “In a difficult pandemic situation that demands a lot from us all, I would consider a visit to be the wrong signal,” Nehammer announced on Facebook on Thursday. The impending omicron wave required stricter measures for all people – “I don’t want to exempt myself from it”.

Because of Corona, Nehammer will watch the concert on TV
“The New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic is world-famous and an important part of our country’s cultural identity. Although it is difficult for me, as Federal Chancellor I will not attend it this time,” wrote Nehammer. The Chancellor now wants to watch the concert in front of the television. All other ÖVP government members also refrain from attending the New Year’s concert, the APA said.
The New Year’s concert will be broadcast on January 1st at 11.15 a.m. on ORF 2 and Ö1 as well as in the ORF TV counter.
