A few days after closing, the Valle d’Itria Festival has a new artistic director. The board of directors of the Paolo Grassi Foundation has appointed the German Sebastian Schwarz to replace Alberto Triola for the three-year period 2022-2024 who, after 12 years, has chosen to leave the artistic direction to concentrate on the role of superintendent of the Toscanini of Parma. «I am leaving the Valle d’Itria Festival after twelve very intense and splendid years – comments Alberto Triola – of which seven alongside Fabio Luisi. The balance of the work done will be written in due time ». As mentioned, Sebastian Schwarzs succeeds Alberto Triola, who signed 12 editions of the festival chaired by Franco Punzi. In the history of the festival there have been four artistic directors: the first, Paolo Stefanelli, when the festival was founded in 1975 by Alessandro Caroli. Then the turning point with Rodolfo Celletti under the presidency of Franco Punzi. Subsequently the arrival of the Italian-French musicologist Sergio Segalini and in 2010 the appointment of Alberto Triola.

The challenge

The news of the change in the artistic direction of Valle d’Itria came a few days after the closing of the 47th edition of the Festival which, despite the pandemic, took place with great success and appreciation from national and international audiences and critics. For Punzi, Schwarz will be able to take up “the challenge of further projection of the Martinese event in an international context and his appointment, a few days after the end of the 2021 festival, is a sign of an iron will: to immediately start preparations for the editions to come”. “I have been attending the Itria Valley Festival, one of the most prestigious Italian musical realities in my opinion, for twenty years – says Schwarz – capable of stimulating curiosity and enriching the international opera scene with interesting paths of contamination between styles and forms, a characteristic of its own of the operatic genre since its inception. I will take this Festival and its Foundation to heart, so projected to produce new shows, to train young generations of artists with its Accademia del Belcanto, and also of the public, without obviously abandoning the Regio, an extraordinary theater, which I love, with workers of excellence, and that is coming out of a difficult period. It will mean – jokes the director – that during the day I will work for the Regio, for which the next season of concerts that we will present on September 10 is almost ready, and at night for the Festival, whose last fantastic edition has just closed ” .
