Colombo: Sri Lankan Justice Minister Vijayadasa Rajabkase said yesterday that the former President of Sri Lanka wanted to retain the power to dismiss the Prime Minister and Ministers at will. After he was removed from office, the 22A Amendment to the Constitution was drafted. With this, the President of Sri Lanka will no longer be able to arbitrarily remove the Prime Minister and Ministers. Appointments to all senior posts, including the post of Governor of the Central Bank, can only be made by the President after obtaining the approval of the Parliament. According to Article 22A, the President will continue to be the Defense Minister of the country. If ministers are not appointed for some departments, the chancellor will look after that department only for 14 days,’ he said.
