Peter Jacob, chairman of the Pakistan Center for Social Justice, has welcomed the Pakistani government’s decision to stop mentioning the religion of employees in public advertisements for public works and administrative jobs.

He said this in a statement to Fides News Agency welcoming the announcement by the Punjab government of Pakistan released last week.

Jacob added that the announcement, made at the request of the National Human Rights Commission (NCHR), was good news for religious minorities and would go a long way in eliminating differences in various ways.

For years, Pakistani civil society organizations have been criticizing employment ads targeting religious minorities employed for cleaning and other minor jobs reserved for “non-Muslim” workers, according to reports.

In Pakistan, 95 percent of workers cleaning streets, sewers, hospitals, schools and public institutions are from religious minorities.
