CHENNAI: Following the fixing of new electricity rates, the Electricity Board has changed the public service electricity tariff rates in 2.50 lakh flats till yesterday.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, free up to 100 units in households; It also provides subsidized electricity up to 500 units.

All over the state, including Chennai, there are many apartment complexes consisting of several houses. A separate electricity connection is provided to each house in the residences.


Apart from this, a separate power connection is provided for public services called ‘Common Service’ which include lights, meeting room, ‘lift, motor pump, gym’ etc. in the residential premises.

For this public service connection, electricity charges are charged in the household section.

Thus, up to 100 units are free for that segment as well; Subsidized payments up to 500 units were available.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has ordered to increase the electricity tariff from September 10.

In that Tariff Order, a new tariff was introduced for public service electricity use in flats, in response to the domestic tariff.

Accordingly, 8 rupees charge for 1 unit of electricity; 100 rupees per 1 kilo watt per month has also been fixed as a permanent charge.

Subsequently, the Electricity Board ordered the Assistant Engineers to go to the flats and collect the electricity tariff rate provided for the public service electricity connection.

As of yesterday, 2.50 lakh flats have been shifted to the new tariff for public services in the domestic category.

The electricity board has slowed down the pace of this tariff change work as residents of many flats are protesting.
