MUMBAI: A cabinet committee headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has approved the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities in Maharashtra.
The recent political turmoil in Maharashtra has led to a split in the Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena dissident group led by Eknath Shinde has formed the government along with the BJP.

Before stepping down as chief minister, the cabinet meeting headed by Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray was held on 28th of last month. Then, it was decided to change the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities.

The decision passed last month is said to be illegal as it was discussed in a cabinet meeting after the governor ordered proof of majority in the assembly. The resolution was then brought forward again and discussed in the new Cabinet Committee meeting headed by Eknath Shinde. As no new ministers were sworn in, only two people, Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis from the BJP, participated in the meeting. The name change was reportedly approved in a cabinet meeting.
