Shahbaz and his family fled the country in 1999 when the Nawaz government lost power in a military coup led by army chief Pervez Musharraf. He spent eight years in Saudi Arabia. Returned to Pakistan in 2007. In 2008, he became the Chief Minister of Punjab for the second time. He remained in power in 2013.

In 2017, when Nawaz Sharif was disqualified in the Panama controversy, Shahbaz took over as president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party. With Imran’s victory in the 2018 elections, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. In October 2020, Shahbaz was arrested for money laundering and illegal acquisition of property. He was released on bail months later. The proceedings in the case are in progress.
