The popular video game Fortnite has implemented an update that now displays age ratings for every experience within the game. However, as a result of these changes, certain in-game outfits are restricted from being used in experiences with lower age ratings.
According to a recent blog post from the Fortnite team, some outfits cannot be utilized in experiences that are rated Everyone or Everyone 10 Plus. This means that certain virtual clothing items may not be accessible in certain game modes.
One player, while attempting to visit an E-rated experience themed around The Game Awards, was surprised to receive a notice in the Fortnite lobby stating that their selected outfit could not be worn in experiences of that age rating. Additionally, a warning icon appeared on a virtual accessory in the player’s locker, indicating it could not be used in experiences rated Everyone 10 Plus or lower. Upon loading into the experience, the game removed the accessory entirely.
The criteria for determining which outfits are unsuitable for certain experiences has not been specified by Epic, the developer of Fortnite. When questioned about the details, an Epic spokesperson directed individuals back to the blog post for further information.
The blog post does mention that 7% of outfits are only compatible with experiences rated Teen. However, Epic plans to address this issue over the next year by modifying the outfits to “auto-adjust appearance” so that “most” blocked outfits can be used in all experiences. However, the company acknowledges that they may not be able to find a solution for every cosmetic, particularly in cases where it would require a complete redesign of the outfit.
In an example provided by spokesperson Dan Walsh, he mentioned the potential removal of a gun attached to the leg of a particular outfit, Agent Peeley. Despite the challenges, Epic is working to address as many restricted outfits as possible in the coming year.
