A 41-year-old Syrian was on the loose in the northern part of Essen for about two hours, presumably setting two fires and breaking into two vegetable stores in Katernberg before he was finally arrested. This graphic shows an overview of the crime scenes.

1st Station – Large Fire in Altenessen: Video Shows Dramatic Rescue Operation
The first emergency call was received by the fire department shortly after 5 PM. There was a fire in a multi-family house at the corner of Altenessener Straße/Pielsticker Straße. People were trapped inside and tried to rescue each other with ladders. The fire department had trouble reaching the scene, apparently because people had parked their cars in no-parking zones. There were several injuries, including two children aged two and four, who are in critical condition. This video shows the dramatic rescue efforts of the residents.

2nd Large Fire on Zollvereinstraße in Essen-Stoppenberg
Another incident occurred shortly after on Zollvereinstraße in Essen-Stoppenberg. Here, too, the fire was reportedly set in the entrance area of a house. There were several injuries due to smoke inhalation.
3rd Delivery Van Crashes Multiple Times into Vegetable Store in Essen: Video of the Scene
According to current information, the police believe that the perpetrator drove to Katernberg after the second arson on Zollvereinstraße. There, he crashed at the corner of Katernberger Straße/Meybuschhof into a vegetable store with the front of his car at full speed. He then shifted into reverse and drove through the store’s windows once again before continuing along Katernberger Straße.

4th Man with Machete Storms Another Vegetable Store in Essen-Katernberg: Disturbing Video
At the height of house number 53, diagonally across from Lidl, there is the “Arab House,” also a vegetable store in Essen-Katernberg. This video shows how the man stops there, gets out with a machete in one hand and a knife in the other, and storms into the store.

5th Police Arrests Machete Man in an Essen Backyard
After about two hours, the ordeal is over: the 41-year-old stands in a backyard in a storage hall surrounded by garden furniture, children’s bicycles, and a paddling pool, being initially pelted with objects by some men. Buckets of cement and iron rods are used; loud shouting ensues. One man holds a shovel like a baseball bat. The Syrian continues to hold the knife in one hand and the machete in the other, falling multiple times but getting back up. Eventually, the police arrive, loudly order him to lay on the ground, and finally arrest him.
