Venezuelan security forces have fired tear gas and rubber bullets at angry protesters who disagree with a victory that Maduro is claiming, but which the opposition and many other countries are questioning.

Thousands of people flooded the streets of several districts of the capital chanting: “Freedom, freedom!” and “This government will fall!”. Some tore Maduro’s campaign posters from poles and burned them.

Protesters across the country toppled at least two statues of the late socialist Hugo Chavez, who led the country for more than a decade and chose Maduro as his successor.

At least one person was killed in the northwestern state of Jaracuy and 46 others were arrested in demonstrations that broke out after the election, Alfredo Romero, head of the political prisoners’ rights group Foro Penal, said on social network X.

In Caracas, members of the National Guard fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters, some wearing motorcycle helmets and bandanas to protect themselves, while others threw rocks at police.

Protests have even been reported in the poorest neighborhoods of Caracas, bastions of support for Maduro and his socialist government. Shots were heard in some places. Protests broke out elsewhere in Venezuela.
