Alarm bells are ringing in Europe’s capitals. Well over a quarter of a million people entered the EU illegally this year alone – more than since the great refugee crisis of 2015/16: reports the border protection agency Frontex. Adding to the excitement, numbers on the two busiest routes in the Central Mediterranean and the Western Balkans hit record highs in October and are expected to rise further in the coming weeks. An extraordinary council of EU interior ministers on migration will therefore take place next Friday. However, in this fragile situation, some EU capitals prefer to take national measures instead of finally finding a common compromise on the migration issue after years of dispute. These measures are not always legally enforceable. “Die Presse” gives an overview.
