BarcelonaThe European Union has made the urgency very clear: from 2025, member states will have to guarantee the installation of a charger for electric cars at least every 60 kilometers on major roads. The need to reduce the volume of vehicle emissions will increase the pace of investments in the coming years to develop the infrastructure required by these models. Catalonia still has a lot of work to do in terms of charging points and the industry sees it as an opportunity to open new markets. Perhaps because of all this, in 2024 the company based in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat Floox will launch its own charger for the electric vehicle designed and manufactured in the Principality.
The official presentation of this 100% Catalan model will take place in October, as part of the eMobility Experience fair held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, but the company has already advanced some details. It is a 60 kW fast charger, i.e. a power that, depending on the vehicle model, would allow the battery to be charged to 80% in about 45 minutes. The firm has been working on this project for 24 months through a team of 15 engineers with the aim of launching a product on the market that is ours but also more compact than that of its competitors.
The Floox charger is designed to be installed on the wall in gas stations – which will increasingly be electric – or in shopping centers, where customers can leave their cars charging while they shop. The manufacture of this charger will take place in Catalonia, but company sources admit to the ARA that its facilities will not be able to handle the entire volume of orders. That is why the group plans to collaborate with other industries in the area of Baix Llobregat to whom to order components, although the production process has yet to be defined.
Zero kilometer model
Floox is part of a larger company, Premium PSU, which was founded in 1981 and manufactures electrical equipment for sectors such as rail. For now, this younger division has focused on distributing three models of fast and ultra-fast chargers through another manufacturer (the Ultrafloox, the Superfloox and the Powerfloox), while working in parallel with its own model of kilometer zero. Premium PSU has a staff of more than 130 workers, invoiced nearly 15 million euros last year and expects to reach 30 million in the next two years.
