Professional boxer Hannah Rapp, 26, died in Brazos County, Texas, on July 18, 2026, after a driver struck her bicycle on FM 159. The driver, 31-year-old Charles Medina, has been charged with manslaughter and is currently being held at the Brazos County Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
Circumstances of the Fatal Collision
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on the 23000 block of FM 159. Hannah Rapp was riding her bicycle alongside her boyfriend when a vehicle driven by Charles Medina passed them at a high rate of speed. Rapp’s boyfriend reportedly threw his arms up and hollered towards the defendant
to signal the driver.
The investigation indicates that Medina responded by braking abruptly. Sheriff’s deputies reported that the driver slammed on his brakes and skidded to a stop before putting his vehicle into reverse.
Following this, investigators allege that Medina rapidly accelerated in reverse and struck Rapp with his vehicle, knocking her backwards into the roadway.
Rapp was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Physical evidence at the scene, including the severity of the damage to the 2008 Honda’s rear hatch and the nature of the skid marks, led investigators to dispute the driver’s account of events. Deputy Sheriff Mike Stumpf noted that the reverse skid marks suggested the driver was actively steering toward something while backing up.
Statements from the Defendant
In his statement to the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, Medina claimed he had only just left his home when he encountered the two cyclists. He stated that he believed the pair were trying to flag him down
when they shouted and gestured toward his vehicle. Medina admitted that he stepped on his brakes which caused them to lock up before coming to a stop.
Regarding the collision itself, Medina told investigators he did not see the female cyclist until the last moment before he hit her.
When asked to estimate his speed during the reverse maneuver, Medina claimed he was traveling at 15 mile per hour.
However, investigators concluded that the physical evidence—specifically the shattered rear window and the depth of the impact—was inconsistent with his claim of a low-speed reversal.
Medina’s Prior Arrest Record
The arrest of Charles Medina follows a history of legal encounters in the region. According to ESPN, the 31-year-old has a lengthy arrest history spanning more than a decade. Records from the Brazos County jail indicate that this is the 13th time Medina has been booked since 2012.
