Charles Michel on the participation of Western partners in the BRICS summit“/>
The participation in the latest BRICS summit of countries that in the past were interested in developing relations with Western states indicates the mistakes of the European Union (EU) in interacting with these powers.
As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, this statement was made by the head of the European Council Charles Michelwrites the British newspaper The Financial Times.
The politician commented on the presence of delegations from Turkey, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the BRICS summit in the Russian Federation. He noted that these states traditionally have close ties with the West. Against this background, Michel came to the conclusion that their participation in the event in Kazan is an attempt to “send a signal to the rest of the world.”
As he said, Brussels has always been confident that it was right. Because of this, the regional community has never tried to understand why non-member countries have a different point of view from the EU on certain issues.
“At the European level, there has been a reflex to lecture others. We do not always communicate well, we do not always explain well, talk to others and show respect,” Michel emphasized.
As a result, the head of the European Council expressed confidence that the regional community should begin to treat developing countries with greater respect. First of all, we are talking about states with which Brussels has cooperation agreements.
The XVI BRICS summit took place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. It was attended by heads of more than 20 states interested in joining the association as full members or partners.
