West Virginia Couple Arrested in Child Neglect Case Involving Methamphetamine

A Kanawha County, West Virginia, couple faces serious charges after authorities discovered a dangerous environment for a young child during a routine arrest. Amanda Oakes, 41, and Shaun Shamblin, 35, both of Charleston, were taken into custody following the discovery of loaded methamphetamine needles within reach of a 5-year-old child inside a local hotel room.

On Monday, Charleston police initiated an arrest warrant for Oakes at a hotel situated on MacCorkle Avenue Southeast. As officers were making the arrest, a discarded needle cap was observed, immediately prompting a thorough search of the premises. The subsequent investigation revealed two uncapped needles containing methamphetamine in the bathroom, an area easily accessible to the young child.

Dangerous Conditions Discovered During Arrest

The search also uncovered additional evidence suggesting a hazardous environment. According to court records, investigators found burnt foil and a blood-stained towel within the hotel room. These findings led to charges of child neglect with risk of bodily injury for both Oakes and Shamblin, as detailed in a criminal complaint filed with the Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Oakes faces additional charges, including possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. These charges significantly escalate the severity of the case and highlight the potential danger posed by the situation.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Both Oakes and Shamblin are currently being held at the South Central Regional Jail while awaiting further court proceedings. The case underscores the ongoing struggle with substance abuse and its devastating impact on families and communities within Kanawha County and beyond. The priority now is ensuring the safety and well-being of the child involved, and holding those responsible accountable for creating such a perilous situation.
