Happy birthday to Charlize Theron who turns 48 today, Monday 7 August 2023. Born in Benoni, South Africa, in 1975, the Hollywood diva-Oscar winner for ‘Monster’-spends her childhood on the farm of her parents, who are wealthy landowners and own a road construction company. At the age of six she begins to take dance lessons. She at thirteen she is enrolled in a boarding school in Johannesburg, where she has the opportunity to further refine her skills as a dancer. At the age of fifteen, a dramatic event upsets her life: her mother shoots her husband, violent and alcoholic, in self-defense, killing him, according to Cinematografo.it.

In 1991, after winning a local contest for aspiring models, Charlize was offered the chance to start modeling. So she leaves for Milan and works as a model for a year, before realizing that the role of ‘changing beauty’ bores her deeply. So she, finding herself in New York for work, decides to stay there and return to her first love, dance, with the Joffrey Ballet. Just when she seems to be well underway, her career as a dancer is however cut short by a knee injury. At 18, Charlize has to start all over again. Heeding her mother’s insistence, she went to Hollywood where in 1994 John Crosby, an agent who represented Renee Russo and John Hurt among others, noticed her while she was arguing with a bank employee who refused to pay her a check. Impressed, he leaves her his business card. Eight months later, Charlize makes her big screen debut.

After Elizabeth Berkley was preferred to her for the lead role of ‘Showgirls’ (a fortunate exclusion, considering the film’s fiasco), she was chosen for ‘Two Days without Breath’ (1996). Meanwhile, she begins taking acting lessons. Only a year later, her acting career received a definitive boost with the participation in ‘The Devil’s Advocate’, alongside Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves. In 1998, she next appeared in Woody Allen’s ‘Celebrity’ (for which she also starred in ‘The Curse of the Jade Scorpion’) and in Ron Underwood’s fairytale ‘Big Joe’. In 1999 she is the protagonist of the sci-fi ‘The Astronaut’s Wife’ by Rand Ravich, in which she is the wife of Johnny Depp, and she takes part in ‘The rules of the cider house’ by Lasse Hallström, multi-nominated at the Oscars. In 2004, thanks to the interpretation of the multiple murderer Aileen Wuornos, she won several awards for Best Actress including the Oscar, the Silver Bear in Berlin and the Golden Globe (dramatic film category).

Among her most critically acclaimed roles there are also the two collaborations with director Jason Reitman, the first for Young adult (2011), and the second for Tully (2018), melancholy story of a woman in crisis immediately after the birth of her his third daughter; both roles earned the actress a Golden Globe nomination.

UN Ambassador, she is a member of women’s and animal rights organizations, such as PETA. She is the mother of two daughters, Jackson and August, both adopted. The South African-born actress’ last major relationship was with star Sean Penn in 2015.
