  • Cyclist Charlotte Dujardin will not compete in Paris.

  • In a four-year-old video, she can be seen abusing her horse.

  • The world association has temporarily suspended the three-time Olympic champion.

World governing body FEI has announced that three-time Olympic dressage champion Charlotte Dujardin has been temporarily suspended. The 39-year-old requested this herself because of a video until the investigations were completed. The video shows Dujardin acting against horse welfare.

She herself admitted that her behavior was inappropriate. The FEI initially announced that Dujardin had been suspended for six months and later clarified that this measure would apply indefinitely, depending on the investigation.

Video is already four years old

The four-year-old video shows that she made a wrong decision during a training session, Dujardin said on social networks. She wrote that she had decided to withdraw from all competitions for the time being – including the Olympic Games in Paris.

“What happened was not like me at all and does not reflect how I train my horses or teach my students, but there is no excuse,” the statement said. “I’m ashamed of myself and I should have set a better example at that moment.”

The three-time Olympic champion apologizes

Dujardin did not describe what was seen on the video. “I sincerely apologize for my behavior,” his statement said. She said she was worried she had disappointed everyone, including her British team, fans and sponsors. He will co-operate fully with the FEI and the British associations and will not make any further comment until the process is complete.

FEI President Ingmar De Vos said she was “very disappointed” by the situation. The welfare of the horses cannot be put at risk. Dujardin expressed sincere regret.

Instead of the individual Olympic champion from the 2012 games in London and 2016 in Rio, Becky Moody could now move up to Jagerbomb, who has been riding much weaker until now.

Memories of Tokyo

Dujardin’s case is reminiscent of the Summer Games in Tokyo, where there was also a case of animal cruelty, but during the competition. In Tokyo, the modern pentathlete Annika Schleu hit the horse Saint Boy, which was drawn to her, several times with the whip out of sheer desperation. As a result, Schleu was investigated by the public prosecutor’s office and reported by the animal protection society.

Schleu beats the horse.
