A rare simultaneous global outage disrupted three of the world’s most popular generative artificial intelligence platforms on September 3, leaving users worldwide unable to access OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok, according to The Verge. Outage-tracking data from Downdetector recorded sharp spikes in complaints across multiple regions, with tens of thousands of users reporting failed responses, error messages, and services refusing to load properly as detailed by GizBot.
Global Outage Hits OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI
In the United States alone, Downdetector logged more than 35,000 reports of issues with ChatGPT, over 1,400 reports involving Claude, and more than 1,200 reports concerning Grok, according to India Today. Comparable disruptions were registered internationally, including in India where thousands of complaints were recorded across the three services, as reported by Hindustan Times. While individual AI service outages are not uncommon, industry observers noted that it is highly unusual for multiple competing platforms to experience major disruptions simultaneously.
Platform-Specific Status and Mitigation Efforts
Each of the affected companies acknowledged the technical problems through official status dashboards and social media channels. OpenAI reported elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex,
which disrupted user conversations, login procedures, file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research, and image generation, as noted by The Verge. OpenAI later stated that it had applied a mitigation
and was monitoring recovery, although tools continued to experience degraded performance.
Anthropic experienced a partial outage affecting Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. The company’s status page indicated that elevated errors impacted multiple models, initially including Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8, and Opus 4.6, before narrowing to focus on Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Anthropic technical staff member CJ Avilla stated on X that an “infrastructure issue” caused the partial outage, adding, We’re working on it but don’t have an ETA yet.
Meanwhile, xAI confirmed that Grok was suffering a service disruption affecting its web interface and mobile applications on Android and iOS. Users attempting to prompt the chatbot on X encountered error notices stating, This model is overloaded right now. Please try again shortly or pick a different model.
xAI’s status page indicated that the team was working to restore service as quickly as possible.
Infrastructure Speculation and Impact on Users
The root cause of the simultaneous failures remains unconfirmed, leaving experts and users to speculate about potential shared infrastructure vulnerabilities. Analysts noted that Microsoft Azure experienced a spike in outage reports around the same timeframe, and all three affected AI platforms rely on Azure for cloud services in some capacity, according to 9to5Google. However, because these platforms utilize complex infrastructure spread across multiple providers, tech researchers cautioned that a shared outage window does not definitively prove a single point of failure.
The widespread disruption significantly impacted workplaces and individual users who depend on the tools for daily tasks ranging from writing, coding, and mathematical problem-solving to research and content creation. While the three major platforms struggled, Google’s Gemini did not declare an official outage—despite seeing a minor bump in user complaints on Downdetector—and alternative tools such as DeepSeek and Perplexity AI remained operational for stranded users.
